Split system maintenance tips that keep your unit efficient

10 May 2026 · 5 min read

Most split system callouts we attend in January trace back to something that could have been cleaned in October.

Filters first, always

The filters behind the front cover of the indoor head are the single biggest influence on performance. Wash them in warm water monthly through heavy use, dry them fully and refit them. Blocked filters starve the coil of air, ice it up and force the compressor to work harder for less cooling.

Look after the outdoor unit

Keep at least 300mm of clear space around the condenser, trim back plants, and hose loose leaves and grass clippings off the coil fins with the power isolated. In bayside suburbs, salt air accelerates corrosion, so a rinse is worth doing more often.

Watch the drain

Water dripping inside usually means a blocked condensate drain, not a refrigerant fault. Algae and dust build a plug in the line over a season. A professional split system deep cleaning clears the drain, sanitises the barrel fan and removes the biofilm that causes musty smells.

  • Musty smell when the unit starts — barrel fan and coil need a deep clean
  • Water marks on the wall below the head — blocked or sagging drain line
  • Ice on the indoor coil — airflow restriction or low refrigerant charge

Multi-head systems need more attention

A multi-head split system service should cover every indoor head, not just the one that is misbehaving. One dirty head affects the pressures the whole system runs at, so partial servicing gives partial results.

Book a professional service

Homeowner maintenance handles the dust; refrigerant pressures, electrical testing and coil chemistry need a technician. Book an air conditioning service with RapidFix Solutions before summer, or call us for an emergency split system repair when it fails mid heatwave.
