Why regular heater servicing is essential before winter

18 March 2026 · 5 min read

The busiest week of our year is always the first genuine cold snap. Almost every call we take could have been prevented by an autumn service.

Heaters fail when they're asked to work

A gas heater can sit untouched for eight months of the year. Dust settles on the burners, spiders build in the flue, capacitors slowly dry out and filters clog with the fine grit that comes with a Melbourne summer. None of that shows up until the unit is asked to run for hours at a time.

That's why the phones run hot in the first week of real cold. The fault was already there — winter simply revealed it.

What an autumn service actually covers

A proper service is far more than a visual check. Ours includes a burner and heat exchanger clean, gas pressure test, combustion analysis, electrical and safety-switch testing, filter replacement, fan current draw measurement and a carbon monoxide test.

  • Burner and heat exchanger cleaned and inspected for cracking
  • Gas pressure and combustion measured against manufacturer specification
  • Return-air filters replaced and airflow verified at the outlets
  • Carbon monoxide test on every gas appliance
  • Thermostat calibration checked against actual room temperature

The safety argument

Carbon monoxide is odourless and the early symptoms — headaches, nausea, tiredness — are easy to mistake for a winter bug. A cracked heat exchanger can spill combustion products into your living space. This is the single strongest reason to have gas heating tested annually, especially in older homes across Melbourne's north.

The running-cost argument

A dirty burner and restricted airflow force a heater to run longer to hit the same temperature. Across a Melbourne winter that difference shows up clearly on the bill. Most households recover the cost of a service in reduced gas use and avoided emergency callout fees.

Book before the rush

March through May is the ideal window. Book a heating service with RapidFix Solutions and we'll have your system tested, cleaned and ready before the first cold week arrives.
