Ignition and lockout faults
If the heater clicks, tries to light, then shuts down and displays a fault code, the usual culprits are a worn igniter, a dirty flame sensor or a failing gas valve. Repeated lockouts are a protective response — the appliance is refusing to run unsafely, and resetting it repeatedly is not a fix.
Dirty burner and incomplete combustion
A gas heater dirty burner produces a soft yellow flame, soot marks and a smell you can pick from the next room. Incomplete combustion wastes gas and produces carbon monoxide. This fault is common in units that have gone several years without a service.
Blocked flue
A gas heater blocked flue traps combustion products that should leave the building. Symptoms include condensation on windows while the heater runs, a stale smell, and the unit cycling off shortly after starting. Airflow and fan faults
Weak airflow at the outlets usually means clogged filters, a slipping or failing fan motor, or crushed and disconnected ducting in the roof space. Overheating from restricted airflow will trip the high-limit switch and shut the heater down mid-cycle.
