Sizing matters more than brand. Here's how the main system types compare for Melbourne conditions.
Split systems
Best value for cooling one or two rooms. Modern inverter splits are quiet and efficient, and they heat well too, which makes them a strong all-year option for smaller homes and apartments.
Multi-split systems
One outdoor unit serving several heads. Useful where there's no roof space for ducting or where an owners' corporation limits the number of outdoor units. Slightly less efficient than individual splits at part load.
Ducted refrigerated
The most discreet whole-home solution, and with zoning it can be economical to run. It requires adequate roof space and correct duct sizing — a poorly designed duct layout ruins an otherwise good system.
Evaporative cooling
Cheap to run and brings in fresh air, which suits Melbourne's dry heat. Performance drops on humid days and it requires open windows, so it's not right for every household.
Get the sizing right
