Air conditioning energy saving tips that actually work

4 November 2026 · 4 min read

Set points, filters, zoning and shading. Small changes that make a measurable difference to summer bills.

Respect the set point

Every degree lower costs meaningfully more to run. Around 24°C in summer is comfortable for most homes. Setting 18°C does not cool the room faster — it just runs the compressor longer.

Clean filters, always

A clogged filter is the most common cause of poor performance we attend. Washing filters monthly during summer is free and takes five minutes.

Cool the rooms you're in

Use zoning on ducted systems and close doors to unused rooms on splits. Conditioning empty bedrooms all afternoon is pure waste.

Stop the heat at the window

External blinds and awnings on west-facing glass do more for a Melbourne afternoon than any thermostat adjustment. Keeping heat out is cheaper than removing it.

Give the outdoor unit room to breathe

Plants, fences and stored items around the condenser force the system to work harder. Keep at least half a metre clear and hose the coil down gently each spring.
